RWE on expansion course: Apparently showing strong interest in the acquisition of Ørsted

RWE shares in a downward trend: Energy company continues to record losses in stock prices on Wednesday.

The stocks of the energy company RWE again recorded losses on Wednesday. Through electronic trading via XETRA, the stock price dropped by 3.18 percent to 37.14 euros. As reported by "Manager Magazin", the German company plans to further expand its business with renewable energies.

A possible acquisition of the Danish wind park giant Ørsted was also considered. A merger of the two companies would create a European industry leader with a revenue of approximately 56 billion euros and 29,000 employees.

First negotiations between RWE and the Danish government, who holds the majority shares in Ørsted, ended without success. The Danish government currently rejected the acquisition, while RWE CEO Markus Krebber sees the potential for such a merger and does not consider the rejection as final. Neither RWE nor Ørsted have officially commented on the report.

Ørsted is currently in a difficult situation. In October of this year, the specialist in wind farms had to halt the construction of two major projects on the coast of New Jersey due to exorbitant costs. This led to the resignation of two board members and a write-off of nearly four billion euros.

The company's stocks fell by 25 percent, but were able to recover afterwards and reached the highest price since September at the beginning of this week.

The possible merger between RWE and Ørsted would be an important step in the strategy of the German energy corporation to focus more on renewable energy. RWE had already shown interest in expanding its business in this area in the past and is now looking to a possible partnership with Ørsted.

The Danish company is one of the largest producers of wind energy worldwide and would help RWE to achieve its goal of being CO2-neutral by 2040. The two companies have not officially confirmed whether further discussions on a merger will take place.
