The significance of autonomous driving in the automotive industry is steadily increasing. In addition to Tesla, other manufacturers are also striving to develop their own autonomous driving systems. Recently, Toyota has emerged as a new competitor in the forefront.

Tesla's Efforts Towards the "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) System Have Been a Topic for Years

The new "Full Self-Driving" is said to recognize traffic signals and right-of-way rules. However, Tesla emphasizes that the software does not yet make the vehicle fully autonomous, and the driver must be able to intervene at any time.

Tesla's shareholders reacted positively to the news. The stock rose by 15.31 percent, marking its best day since March 2021, reports CNBC.

There were also critical voices.

In China, Tesla is increasingly confronted with local brands. In the last quarter of 2023, BYD overtook Tesla in global deliveries. Competitors are also scoring points with driver assistance systems, whereas Tesla has been limited in this area so far.

Recently, Tesla's competitors BYD and NIO received permission to test their automated driving technology on the road. Nine automakers are allowed to use self-driving features in designated areas of seven cities, including Beijing and Shanghai. Before practical testing can begin, tests and safety assessments are still required, according to the ministry, as reported by "DER AKTIONÄR".

The newest competitor in this field is the Japanese company Toyota. According to Electrek, Toyota plans to introduce an electric vehicle with an advanced autonomous driving system in China next year. Toyota's joint venture GAC Toyota plans to launch the Bozhi 3X SUV, which is expected to have full self-driving capabilities similar to Tesla's vehicles.

The technology is based on a partnership with Momenta, an autonomous vehicle startup from Beijing. Toyota was one of the main investors in Momenta's Series C funding round in 2021. Momenta's intelligent driving solution uses a data-driven, AI-powered flywheel and offers a safe and reliable driving experience for all scenarios, reports Gasgoo.

The vehicles will be equipped with a 126-line LiDAR and the NVIDIA Orin X platform, which offers a computational power of 254 TOPS. This solution allows the vehicle to activate intelligent driving functions wherever there is a road, avoid obstacles, and park in any free spots.

While Tesla continues to make progress in developing its FSD system, the competition is getting stronger. The innovative power and collaboration with leading tech companies indicate that the race for dominance in autonomous driving is becoming more intense. The future of autonomous driving remains exciting and promising, with significant technological advancements on the horizon.
