Microsoft delays the launch of new Windows search feature "Recall" following massive criticism. Initially, the feature was set to be available on June 18 along with a new PC type. Now, Microsoft plans to test "Recall" on a smaller scale within the "Windows Insider" program, as the company announced on Thursday.
Recall" is intended to make it easier for users to find information on their PC. The software uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze stored screenshots and creates an index of the content they contain. This should, for example, help to rediscover a visited website if you no longer remember the name but do remember that it featured palm trees and a beach. A search for "palm trees and beach" would then display the desired page.
After the announcement of "Recall," however, some AI security researchers warned of potential privacy issues. They expressed concerns that cyber attackers could also access the lists. Microsoft responded last week by announcing better security for the "Recall" data and disabling the function by default during PC setup. Users would need to activate it. Despite these adjustments, the criticism persisted, ultimately leading to the postponement.
On June 18, Microsoft and the manufacturers of Windows computers plan to launch the new PC category "Copilot+PC," which is more tailored to the use of artificial intelligence. The name is modeled after Microsoft's AI assistant "Copilot.
In NASDAQ trading, Microsoft's stock increased by 0.22 percent and was priced at 442.57 USD.
