Google Enhances Theft Protection for Android Smartphones with Artificial Intelligence (AI). At the Developer Conference I/O in Mountain View, the Alphabet subsidiary announced that AI will soon be able to detect theft movements and immediately lock the screen. This new feature is intended to make it more difficult for thieves to access stolen devices and, for example, plunder online bank accounts of the victims.
Additionally, Google introduced extra security measures to make the resale of stolen devices less appealing. Resetting the device will no longer be possible without the corresponding device or Google account information, rendering the device virtually unsellable for criminals.
The security updates also include preventive measures against unauthorized removal of theft protection. Changes to PINs or disabling of the protection are only possible at trusted locations and with biometric confirmation. Additionally, users can store sensitive data in a separate, hidden area on the smartphone and secure it additionally.
The new features will be rolled out gradually through Google Play services on smartphones with Android 10 or newer. Some of the more advanced features require the upcoming Android 15.
These measures are part of Google's efforts to keep pace with competitors such as Apple, who have already implemented similar security features. Alphabet's stock showed a slight positive trend in NASDAQ trading, gaining 0.81 percent to 173.33 euros.
