Amazon advances plans with its satellite project Kuiper to offer broadband services in the UK later this year. The tech giant led by Jeff Bezos aims to compete with Elon Musk's dominant Starlink network. Kuiper plans to launch its satellite constellation into low Earth orbit starting in early 2025, a region where satellites can provide broadband services to underserved areas worldwide.

For the provision of broadband services in the UK, Kuiper requires approval from the UK communications authority Ofcom. A final decision on the license is still pending after the consultation phase ended in October. According to Ofcom, Amazon's application for a license for an "Earth Station Network" is currently being reviewed.

In addition to Ofcom, Kuiper also held talks with the UK Ministry of Defence. According to documents, Kuiper presented a study for the UK Space Command, while Blue Origin, Bezos' other space company, spoke about possible deployment capabilities.

While Kuiper is still awaiting regulatory approval, Starlink has already solidified its position. SpaceX offers its satellite broadband service in over 100 countries, including the United Kingdom. Demand in rural regions of the UK is growing rapidly: according to Ofcom, connections increased from 42,000 in 2023 to 87,000 last year. In the southeast of England, including London, Starlink's capacities are already booked.

Kuiper also sees potential in so-called "Direct-to-Device" services, which could allow users to communicate directly on mobile phones via satellites. Ofcom is currently examining the framework conditions that could enable such services from the end of 2025. This technology promises improved connectivity, especially
