After Starlink - a division of Elon Musk's space company SpaceX - reached a significant milestone, speculation is now underway whether an initial public offering (IPO) could be imminent. Starlink strives to develop a growing network of orbital satellites to make internet services accessible to all, especially in regions with challenging internet connections. According to Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Starlink has recently hit breakeven and is thus no longer making losses.

In this context, Musk also praised the team, which, according to him, is doing an outstanding job. Overall, last year was very successful for the SpaceX division, as Starlink exceeded the mark of 5,000 satellites and entered into partnerships with various companies, including Maersk, as reported by Teslarati.

Musk emphasized that Starlink now accounts for the majority of all active satellites and will have cumulatively launched the majority of all satellites from Earth by next year. These achievements make a possible spin-off and IPO of Starlink increasingly attractive, as reported by CNBC. However, according to Musk, SpaceX still needs to overcome a financial challenge to make Starlink profitable.

In 2021, Musk stated that every satellite constellation in history has gone bankrupt and he hopes Starlink will be the first to avoid this. Jonathan Hofeller, Vice President of Starlink, stated in September that SpaceX is no longer suffering financial harm from the production of Starlink, according to Teslarati.

Now that the cash flow is more predictable and even the breakeven point has been reached, nothing may stand in the way of an IPO. However, last year Musk told his employees that an IPO would not take place until after 2025, as reported by CNBC. There is also speculation that SpaceX could go public in the next few years, as predicted by US investment fund manager Ron Baron in an interview. Ultimately, however, it remains unclear whether and when Starlink will actually go public, and speculation continues about a possible IPO for SpaceX.
