Since April, PwC UK has been systematically monitoring its employees' attendance with a dashboard that evaluates badge scans and laptop Wi-Fi connections.
Employees are color-coded: "Amber" means less than 60% attendance, "Red" under 40%. Anyone who repeatedly falls short of the requirements must expect formal measures that may also affect performance evaluations and bonuses. The recording compares ID use and WiFi logins, as well as entries from the HR platform Workday and timesheets.
The step has triggered internal discussions. Some employees expressed concerns about compatibility with the corporate values "Trust" and "Empowerment." PwC, on the other hand, points to the benefits of in-person work and emphasizes that the majority of the workforce accepts the regulations. There are exceptions for hardship cases such as illness or family obligations.
Competitors pursue different strategies: EY began evaluating access data at the beginning of 2023, while Deloitte relies on more flexible models. PwC signals willingness for feedback and maintains special regulations like shorter Fridays in the summer, but simultaneously tightens monitoring to prevent "persistent and willful non-compliance.
