Takeaways NEW
- Meta failed in the demonstration of new smart glasses due to a technical error.
- The incident was due to a resource planning error at Meta.
At this year's developer conference, Meta surprised with the introduction of three new smart glasses models – including an enhanced version of the already known Ray-Ban Meta, the innovative Meta Ray-Ban Display with wrist control, and the sporty Oakley Meta Vanguard. However, the technical demonstration unexpectedly hit a snag.
During one of the demos, the cooking influencer Jack Mancuso tried to prepare a sauce using the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, but due to a delayed response, he couldn't start as planned. After requesting the beginning of the recipe again, the AI simply skipped a step, prompting Mancuso to abandon the presentation. With a "Maybe the Wi-Fi is acting up," he handed back to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
An even more problematic demonstration occurred when the glasses were unable to establish a WhatsApp video connection between Bosworth and Zuckerberg. With a joking comment about the "brutal" Wi-Fi, Bosworth took to the stage.
Later, Andrew Bosworth explained on Instagram that a flaw in resource planning was the cause of the problems. When the Ray-Ban Metas' Live AI function was launched, it activated on all glasses in the room. The resulting traffic crashed Meta's development server, as it was unprepared for this flood. Bosworth admitted: "We essentially paralyzed ourselves."
Another mishap occurred when the glasses' screen went into sleep mode, preventing Zuckerberg from answering an incoming video call. Bosworth described this as a "race condition" bug, which has now been fixed. Despite the failure, Bosworth remains confident: "The demo failed, not the product.
