Social Security 2025: Important Data and Calculations for COLA Adjustment
Eulerpool Research Systems •Sep 23, 2024
Takeaways NEW
- The SSA will announce the COLA adjustment for 2025 on October 10th, which is expected to be 2.5%.
- The COLA will be visible in payments in January 2025, and those affected can then plan with adjusted amounts.
In a few weeks, the highly anticipated announcement of the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2025 will take place. The current projection is approximately 2.5%, which is below the 3.2% that beneficiaries received this year. However, this forecast may still undergo slight changes.
Central to this calculation is October 10, when the Social Security Administration (SSA) will officially announce the adjustment. At that time, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for September 2024 will be published and compared with data from July and August. The COLA value will be derived from these figures.
Interestingly, the COLA is not directly applied to monthly checks. Instead, it is applied to the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) – the amount one would receive upon reaching full retirement age (FRA). Based on the PIA, the government then adjusts the final payout amount depending on when the application for Social Security benefits was submitted.
An initial estimate of future payments can still be easily made. With a COLA of 2.5% and current payments of, for example, $2,000 per month, the amount would increase by $50 to a total of $2,050 per month.
At the beginning of December, the SSA will send personalized notifications to all Social Security recipients indicating the exact amount for 2025. Those who have created a "my Social Security" account by mid-November can also view the notifications digitally and receive email or SMS alerts when the notifications are available.
Although the COLA will technically be applied starting in December 2024, recipients will only receive the adjusted amount in January 2025 because payments are always made in the subsequent month. The exact payment date is determined by the beneficiary's birth date – they will continue to receive their payments either on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of each month. Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive their adjusted payments on December 31, 2024, as January 1, 2025, is a federal holiday.
Once the new amounts are known and confirmed, recipients can plan their budgets for the coming year accordingly. For questions about the COLA and its impact on individual payments, it is advisable to wait for the notification in December, as it may already answer many questions.
