The so-called 'Sleepmaxxing' movement is gaining more and more followers who take extreme measures to achieve the perfect sleep. Derek Antosiek considers himself a kind of sleep connoisseur. He has tried everything: from mouth taping and nasal dilators to separate mattresses and expensive sleep trackers. In recent decades, Americans have discarded the mantra "I'll sleep when I'm dead" and now acknowledge the importance of a good night's sleep. Studies show that sleep duration in the U.S. has increased. Especially Generation Z insists on their right to a full night's sleep without any shame. While sleep attitudes have changed, the basic principle remains the same: at least seven hours of uninterrupted sleep. However, the new passion for perfect sleep leads some to extreme experiments. On social media, 'Sleepmaxxers' proudly present their elaborate sleep rituals, from customizable pillows to morning routines after a night full of sleep aids. There are countless products for sleep enthusiasts: mouth taping, nose expanders, jaw straps, pillow mists, and even high-tech sleep devices that monitor sleep quality. A booming sleep industry has emerged, fueled not least by bestsellers like 'Why We Sleep' by Dr. Matthew Walker. At the same time, experts warn of the danger of excessive focus on sleep. Researchers coined the term “Orthosomnia” in 2017 to describe people who develop sleep problems due to sleep trackers and try to treat these problems on their own. Nonetheless, the increasing emphasis on sleep is a positive change. The various rituals and products can be helpful—as long as they are safe and used to signal sleep onset. Experts emphasize that proven sleep rules, such as regular sleep schedules and avoiding alcohol, remain the best foundation for healthy sleep. Mr. Antosiek quickly realized that his obsession with sleep optimization went too far. After numerous experiments, some of which did more harm than good, he decided to give up his fixation. He now understands: simply feeling well-rested is enough.
