Nvidia has announced plans to invest $100 billion in a partnership with OpenAI to expand the computing capabilities of the ChatGPT owner with at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia AI data centers. The first gigawatts are scheduled to be deployed in the second half of 2026. The specific details of this agreement will be negotiated in the coming weeks.
This cooperation complements the existing joint projects of OpenAI and Nvidia, which, together with a network of partners like Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank, are dedicated to developing the world's most advanced AI infrastructure. Already in January, these companies had pledged to invest at least $100 billion in building data centers for OpenAI.
Only ten days before the announcement of the Nvidia-OpenAI partnership, OpenAI introduced a new preliminary agreement under which Microsoft could acquire a $100 billion equity stake in OpenAI's for-profit division. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized on CNBC that the expansion of data centers by Nvidia significantly contributes to future services.
In addition to this partnership, Nvidia has also announced an investment of $5 billion in chip manufacturer Intel, which is struggling to keep up with the growing demand for AI circuits.
OpenAI continues to be controlled by its nonprofit board, although its corporate structure is the subject of a lawsuit from Elon Musk. Musk accuses OpenAI of betraying its mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity and seeks to prevent control from being taken over by the nonprofit organization.
Meanwhile, the Attorneys General of California and Delaware expressed "serious concerns" about the safety of ChatGPT, particularly for younger users. They pointed to disturbing reports of dangerous interactions between chatbots and users, including the suicide of a California teenager, whose parents are now suing OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman.
