- Microsoft's Copilot application experienced significant growth.
- Despite advances in AI, Microsoft narrowly missed Wall Street expectations.
Microsoft's strategic investments in AI technology are showing early success, as evidenced by the growing interest and increasing use of their generative AI-based software, Copilot. This development highlights the success of Microsoft's billion-dollar efforts to integrate AI across their Azure cloud services, Office 365 productivity products, and the Windows operating system.
Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for AI at Microsoft, reported significant gains in the usage of Copilot for Microsoft 365. In the last quarter, the number of Copilot users increased by more than 60%, while the number of daily users more than doubled. Such growth rates illustrate the successful deployment of AI applications and raise hopes for further achievements.
Despite a revenue increase of 19% in the Intelligent Cloud segment compared to the previous year, Microsoft narrowly missed Wall Street expectations, eliciting short-term negative reactions from investors. Although Microsoft's stock prices have since slightly risen, the gain remains relatively modest compared to competitor Google, which saw an increase of over 20%.
Large organizations such as Capital Group, Disney, Dow, and Novartis are increasingly adopting Copilot, with the number of 1,000-seat subscriptions doubling compared to the previous quarter. The success of Copilot lies in saving corporate users time on tasks, whether by reducing session durations, managing emails, or brainstorming.
However, there is also criticism. Some customers report weaknesses in Copilot when planning and summarizing meetings. This has occasionally led to situations where, for example, a pharmaceutical company retracted a promised improvement because the benefits did not justify the costs.
A study conducted by Microsoft with 60 companies showed a 50% reduction in email usage thanks to Copilot. Additionally, a survey of 1,300 Copilot users indicated that users typically need 11 weeks and must save at least 11 minutes daily for the new tool to be adopted in the long term.
The competition is not idle: Google offers similar AI-backed solutions with Gemini for Workspace, and Salesforce is also actively competing with its own generative AI solutions. Microsoft also plans to roll out Copilot-based updates for the Windows operating system widely.
The future of Microsoft in this emerging market for generative AI remains exciting. To solidify their leadership position in enterprise software, Microsoft must continuously demonstrate that their AI initiatives provide sustainable value.
