Takeaways NEW
- HP remains in China despite reports of production relocation.
- Other technology companies such as Microsoft and Dell are also planning production relocations.
The news that the American computing giant HP might pull its production capacities out of China has caused a stir. However, HP is now attempting to calm the waters. In a statement to the Chinese newspaper Global Times, HP firmly denied a report from Nikkei Asia, which claimed that HP was planning a massive shift of its production out of the world's second-largest economy.
HP, the world's second-largest PC vendor according to research firm IDC, emphasized that PC manufacturing in China remains of central importance. Nonetheless, in a politically and economically tense global environment, HP appears to be optimizing its strategy and seeking more flexibility to enhance supply chain resilience and meet the diverse demands of its global customer base.
So far, HP has not responded to a related email inquiry. The Nikkei report claimed that up to 70 percent of HP's PC production is expected to take place outside China within the next two to three years, with potential production sites being discussed in Thailand and a backup design hub in Singapore.
But HP is not the only company thinking internationally. Other tech giants like Microsoft and Dell have either considered or already implemented production shifts. Microsoft has moved the production of its Xbox gaming consoles from China to Vietnam, and Dell plans to stop using semiconductors made in China by the end of the year.
The impacts of such shifts are not to be underestimated, especially in light of the recent US technology restrictions and trade barriers against China. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and what role China will play in the global technology products supply chain.
