Engineers Still in Demand: How AI Coding Assistants Are Changing Software Development

GitLab CEO William Staples sees no threat to engineers from the use of AI coding assistants. In a conference call to announce the company's financial results, Staples stated that the use of such tools could even increase the number of engineers, as people without extensive technical skills can now program. Staples commented on an ongoing debate in the industry and noted that concerns about the future of engineers often stem from fear. Although he has witnessed many advancements in his 30-year career that question the necessity of engineering skills, he sees that productivity gains ultimately create more opportunities. GitLab offers its own coding assistant, Duo, which competes with tools like Microsoft's Copilot and Cursor. Despite intensive testing by customers, Staples remains unconcerned about the competitive situation. CFO Brian Robins reported that AI coding development is positive for the business. Customers are expanding their subscriptions to include more users, and more code is being produced that GitLab's services can manage. In the first quarter, GitLab posted a 27 percent increase in revenue to $214.5 million. Although the revenue forecast for the second quarter slightly missed expectations, the company's stock has increased by 11 percent over the past year. Meanwhile, so-called "Vibe Coding" skills, a term coined by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, are gaining importance. This development is affecting how significant software skills are considered in the tech industry. Companies like Visa, Reddit, and DoorDash are already requiring experience with AI-based coding in their job listings. Google and Amazon have also taken notice of this trend. Google's CEO Sundar Pichai reported his positive experiences with "Vibe Coding." At Amazon, the introduction of Cursor is being discussed following the tool's interest among employees.
