Takeaways NEW
- New technologies could revolutionize the future of lithium production to meet the increasing global demand.
- Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) Faces Challenges and Opportunities in Cost Reduction and Adaptation to Different Brine Types.
Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) is entering an exciting phase, where the potential for cost reduction comes with challenges in adapting to different types of brines. The non-standardizable nature of brines means that each extraction technique is tailored, hindering rapid progress in lowering costs. However, some companies, like Lilac Solutions, claim that their ion exchange technology can handle a variety of brine chemistries. If DLE technologies can deliver lithium more efficiently and in a more resource-conserving manner, they could become the preferred extraction method. SQM, the operator of one of the largest lithium mines in Chile, has examined numerous DLE technologies and is currently testing twelve of them in pilot plants. Standard Lithium recently formed a joint venture with Equinor to utilize lithium extraction technologies in the USA. In this venture, Koch Technology Solutions offers a technology with high promises regarding efficiency and purity. Innovations are also occurring in other sectors: Evove is working with Northern Lithium to establish a demonstration plant for DLE in the UK, aiming to produce commercially viable lithium by 2027. Additionally, Arcadium Lithium considered accepting an acquisition offer from Rio Tinto to address the challenges of the volatile lithium market. Lithium is being sought not only in traditional brines. Lithium Harvest is developing a technology to extract lithium from wastewater from the oil and gas industry. The opening of a demonstration plant by Cornish Lithium demonstrates the potential to extract lithium from geothermal sources. The DLE industry is at a crucial turning point. The path to commercialization is bumpy, but the market is ready to accept new technologies. In light of growing global demand, DLE could indeed represent the future of lithium production.
