Bluesky causes a stir: EU demands greater transparency from emerging social media platform

Takeaways NEW
- The platform does not meet the information requirements despite its small size.
- EU criticizes Bluesky for lack of transparency and regulatory violations.
Bluesky, the dynamic social media platform, is under scrutiny by the European Union for disregarding existing regulations. As a spokesperson for the European Commission announced during a daily briefing, Bluesky lacks the necessary transparency regarding essential details of its presence in the EU. All platforms, even smaller ones below the set threshold, as is the case with Bluesky, are required to maintain a special information page. This should disclose user numbers within the EU and their legal headquarters. So far, Bluesky has not met this requirement, which is cause for concern. Although the platform does not fall under the 'Very Large Platform' category within the framework of the Digital Services Act due to its size, the Commission has yet to make direct contact with Bluesky. Instead, the 27 national governments of the EU have been involved to gather potential information on the platform. A statement from Bluesky on this matter has not yet been issued.
