Biden Reaches Delegate Threshold for Democratic Presidential Nomination
Eulerpool Research Systems •Mar 13, 2024
Following his recent primary success in the state of Georgia, US President Joe Biden has cleared a crucial hurdle towards his renomination as the Democratic presidential candidate. According to counts by American broadcasters CNN and NBC, the seasoned statesman has secured the required number of delegate votes. Projections are now becoming clear: Joe Biden, already considered a certain candidate due to the lack of intra-party competition, will most likely face Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.
Although the former US president has not yet mathematically secured the necessary threshold of delegate votes, it is almost undisputed that this is only a matter of time. Given his decisive victories in previous primaries and the absence of other significant rivals in the Republican Party, Trump is expected to be confirmed as the presidential candidate. Biden's official nomination will take place at the Democratic Party convention in Chicago in August.
As the Democratic internal selection process nears its customary end, superdelegates, who would have a significant say in the event of a runoff, are losing relevance. A second round of voting is not anticipated. This year is also not marked by surprise candidates; even though personalities such as Marianne Williamson and Jason Palmer won delegate votes in individual territories, they do not pose a serious challenge to Biden's nomination.
The debate over Biden's age remains a focal point. At 81, he would begin a second term as the oldest US president and could leave office at 86. Despite regular gaffes and confusions at public events, his doctor has attested him full capacity to serve, though some physical complaints are noticeable.
The release of an investigative report on secret government documents found in Biden's private quarters casts further shadows on his candidacy. The special investigator described Biden as a 'well-meaning older man with a poor memory.' As expected, the White House's criticism of the report was strong.
In addition to these personal challenges, Biden faces political headwinds due to his position on the Gaza conflict. Particularly in states with a high Muslim population, voters are dissatisfied with his support for Israel. Criticism also comes from young, progressive Democrats, which could impact the upcoming presidential election.
