OpenAI has published concrete plans for its own robots following the revival of its robotics team.

According to the tenders, the team focuses on developing "versatile" and "adaptive" robots that are intended to operate with human-like intelligence in dynamic, real-world environments. For this purpose, OpenAI plans not only to integrate self-developed AI models but also to develop new sensors and computing elements.

We work across the entire model and hardware pipeline and explore various forms of robots," says one of the ads. The robots are to combine advanced AI with the physical demands of real platforms. Indications of humanoid robots, including limbs, are increasing. One goal is mass production: A job posting talks about the development of mechanical systems for "high quantities (1 million+).

The robotics industry is booming. According to Crunchbase, companies in this sector raised more than $6.4 billion from venture capitalists in 2024. In addition to specialized robots for agriculture or factory automation, humanoid robots are generating the most public interest. Companies like X1 and Figure, also backed by OpenAI, are working to develop humanoid systems for widespread use.

OpenAI doesn't stop at robots. The company is also working on its own chip for AI models and collaborating with renowned ex-Apple designer Jony Ive on a new hardware product. The investments in the development of innovative technologies highlight OpenAI's ambitions to help shape the next generation of intelligent systems.
