OpenAI calls for the construction of massive data centers to strengthen AI infrastructure
OpenAI plans to build massive data centers in the USA to advance the development of AI.

The Development Company Behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, Wants to Convince the US Government to Undertake a Massive Expansion of Data Center Infrastructure. According to a Report by Financial Service Bloomberg, OpenAI Plans to Build Data Centers with an Energy Consumption of Up to Five Gigawatts per Year – a Capacity Equivalent to Five Nuclear Reactors and Capable of Powering Approximately Three Million Households.
The company argues that such facilities are necessary to advance the development of artificial intelligence and to remain competitive in the global market, particularly against China. Discussions about the establishment of such centers intensified after a meeting of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at the White House. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI plans to build such a center in the USA first.
Currently, the power demand for AI applications is enormous, as these are trained with massive amounts of data. Programs like ChatGPT require immense computing power to perform tasks such as text formulation or software code writing. OpenAI views the expansion of computing capacities as a foundation to enable more complex AI developments.
At the same time, it was announced that a nuclear reactor at the Three Mile Island power plant in the US, which had been shut down for five years, will be restarted to supply Microsoft data centers. Microsoft is a major partner and investor in OpenAI.
However, Constellation CEO Joe Dominguez expressed concerns about the feasibility of a network of several five-gigawatt data centers. "As an engineer, I don't believe that's possible," he commented.
While the discussion about the implementation of such gigantic infrastructure projects continues, Microsoft's stock was able to gain slightly in Wednesday trading on the NASDAQ, rising temporarily by 0.59 percent to $431.70.
