The TikTok owner ByteDance has established itself as a leader in the race for generative artificial intelligence (AI) in China.

ByteDance invests billions in the development of large language models (LLMs) and AI products. Founder Zhang Yiming, China's richest man, is personally driving the company's AI strategy. Since 2021, ByteDance has poached AI engineers from rivals and built teams for language models. In parallel, the company has expanded international data centers, including in Malaysia, to use Nvidia chips for AI operations outside China.

ByteDance has also developed its own AI chips and recruited talent from Chinese semiconductor firms. The efforts are modeled after Google's Tensor Processing Unit to become less dependent on Nvidia in the long run.

ByteDance's AI chatbot "Doubao," introduced in August 2023, has become China's most popular AI application. With 60 million monthly active users, it significantly surpasses competitors like Baidu's "Ernie Bot." Doubao's success is based on its versatile functionality, including search, translation, and image generation services. Internationally, ByteDance launched the "Cici AI" chatbot, which relies on OpenAI models.

Despite its success, ByteDance's AI strategy carries risks. Focusing on artificial general intelligence (AGI) could lead to geopolitical control, particularly from the USA. ByteDance has developed a dual strategy to train models for China and international markets in parallel, but on separate datasets.

ByteDance faces the challenge of creating new growth engines as Douyin and TikTok are saturated in many markets. Founder Zhang remains convinced that AI is the key for the next five years. However, critics point to past failed projects like gaming and virtual reality.
