Sachin Dev Duggal, founder of the British AI startup Builder.ai, steps down as CEO and hands over leadership to Manpreet Ratia, a partner of the Asia-focused investor Jungle Ventures. However, Duggal remains with the company as a board member and under the title "Chief Wizard.

Builder.ai, which has been funded with $450 million from investors such as Microsoft, SoftBank, and the Qatar Investment Authority, has made a name for itself in the UK tech scene. The company claims to develop apps and websites for small and medium-sized businesses as well as corporations using AI.

The leadership change comes after a turbulent phase for Builder.ai. The Financial Times reported high turnover in the company, complaints about delayed project deliveries, and criticism of Duggal's leadership style. Former employees described the work environment as "hectic", while the company characterized it as "dynamic" and "demanding".

Additionally, Duggal is the focus of an ongoing money laundering investigation in India. The Indian financial authority Directorate of Enforcement named him as a suspect in a warrant application related to the 2018 bankruptcy of the household appliance manufacturer Videocon. Duggal denies any wrongdoing and has appealed the proceedings.

Ratia, Duggal's successor, stated that he would focus on scaling and operational excellence to "continue creating value for customers, employees, and investors." Duggal himself spoke of a "new phase" where fresh perspectives would be crucial for Builder.ai's growth.
