The Lufthansa Group has extended the suspension of its flights to the Middle East by another five days. No flights will be operated to Tel Aviv in Israel, Tehran in Iran, Beirut in Lebanon, Amman in Jordan, and Erbil in Iraq until and including August 26, as the airline group announced. Previously, the flight suspension was in effect until August 21.
In addition, the Iranian and Iraqi airspace will not be used until August 26 inclusive, which also means an extension by five days. The Lufthansa Group's airlines include, in addition to Lufthansa itself, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss, and Eurowings.
This decision comes in light of increasing tensions in the region, particularly the concern that the conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as the tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, could further escalate. There is also fear of a potential military strike by Iran on Israel, after Iran and allied militias threatened retaliation for the killing of a Hamas official in Tehran and a Hezbollah representative in Beirut.
Despite the uncertainties, Lufthansa shares gained 0.90 percent in XETRA trading and closed at 5.61 euros.
