French Tech Startups: Stability Despite Challenges
The volume of venture funding in French tech startups shows slight increases in 2024 but remains below 2022 levels. Artificial intelligence drives growth…
The new report on the French technology ecosystem by Alex Dewez, partner at 20VC, highlights developments in the field of venture financing in France. While the total volume of inflows into French startups in 2024 was 7.1 billion euros, marking a slight increase compared to 2023, there is still a decline compared to 2022, when 11.8 billion euros were raised. Despite these fluctuations, France remains the third-largest tech hub in Europe, behind the United Kingdom and Germany. Paris holds its position as the second most important city, right after London.
A significant part of the growth is attributed to the flourishing artificial intelligence sector, which now accounts for 27% of total startup financing. The sector experienced an 82% increase compared to the previous year. Without advancements in AI, one might have to speak of a slowdown in startup financing. However, this sector is regarded as a major opportunity for new business ideas. The number of unicorns in France rose to 45 in 2024 due to newcomers like Pennylane, Pigment, and Poolside.
At the same time, the industry faces challenges, including large insolvencies and declining interest from British investors. Additionally, the market for public offerings remains cautious. French tech companies are increasingly considering moving to the U.S. stock exchanges, which, however, seems difficult without an existing U.S. customer base.
Despite a 14% decline in exit numbers, the total sum of exits over the past three years has remained stable. Experts are eagerly watching how these trends will affect the French technology ecosystem.
