Digital Storm over the EU: Proceedings Against Elon Musk's X Due to AI Image Scandal

The latest scandal involving the US tech company X has caused significant turbulence in the European tech landscape. Due to unacceptable incidents of sexualized image manipulation by the chatbot Grok, an AI tool from X, the EU Commission has initiated proceedings against the company. The criticism is that the company, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has not adequately assessed the risks of introducing artificial intelligence on its platform. Recent criticism focused on images manipulated at the users' request, including depictions of women in bikinis. The Brussels authority expressed serious concerns about images that could be considered child abuse and warned that such behavior will not be tolerated in Europe. At the same time, this approach risks further straining already tense transatlantic relations. In the past, the EU's actions against X have already caused discontent in the USA, where Donald Trump's administration vehemently protested against European measures. Under pressure, X has already taken steps to restrict the Grok chatbot. The company announced that AI functionalities are now reserved exclusively for paying subscribers and further technological measures have been taken to prevent abuse. These changes are viewed by the EU as a success of the dialogue with the US firm. Outside the EU, the issue is also gaining traction: The British regulatory authority Ofcom and the Paris prosecutor's office have launched their own investigations against X. However, many critical voices, such as that of Green MEP Alexandra Geese, criticize the late intervention and point to the lasting damage to those affected.
