Ukraine is once again in the spotlight of international attention after Iryna Farion, a controversial former deputy, was shot dead by an armed assailant in Lviv. Farion, a prominent linguist and member of a radical nationalist party, had previously made a name for herself with her controversial campaigns to promote the Ukrainian language and discredit Russian-speaking compatriots. Particularly in the eastern regions of Ukraine, which are closer to Russia, many people speak Russian, making Farion a polarizing figure. The 60-year-old was shot in the head by a young man on a street on Friday evening. The perpetrator fled and is currently being sought by Ukrainian authorities. Ihor Klymenko, the Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs, stated at a press conference on Saturday that the attack appears to have been intentional. He did not rule out political motives or personal reasons behind the act and also mentioned a possible Russian involvement. Former officials also speculated about Moscow's involvement in sowing discord, while others warned of potential societal polarization due to the incident. President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that all possible backgrounds would be investigated, including a trail to Russia. Before the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, mysterious deaths and assassinations were not uncommon in the country's political landscape. However, since the beginning of the war, there had been no prominent murders or attempted murders until this incident.
