In a decisive step for national security, the Lithuanian parliament has confirmed a new cabinet led by Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas. The government plans to increase defense spending to enhance deterrence against Russia. In the vote in Vilnius, 85 out of a total of 141 deputies voted for the three-party coalition cabinet, while 14 deputies voted against and 28 abstained. The decision ends weeks of tensions that arose from the decision to include the populist party Awakening of the Nemunas in the alliance. This political alliance aims to strengthen Lithuania’s position amid regional uncertainties and geopolitical challenges. An enhanced defense strategy is deemed necessary to provide stability and security to the region.
