A recently discovered cybercriminal operation with Chinese connections, known as Salt Typhoon, targeted AT&T's systems. The American telecommunications provider confirmed the attacks for the first time on Saturday, assuring, however, that its US networks are now secured. This has been achieved in collaboration with law enforcement and government representatives. AT&T emphasizes that it currently observes no activities by state actors in its networks. According to a recent investigation, only a few individuals of interest to foreign intelligence agencies were actually affected. Despite the limited cases of compromised information, AT&T continuously monitors and improves its networks to protect its customers' data and continues to work closely with authorities to assess and mitigate the threat. On Friday, US authorities added a ninth, unspecified telecommunications company to the list of entities compromised by Salt Typhoon. It was reported that the involved Chinese hackers had extensive access to the networks, allowing them, among other things, to locate millions of individuals and record phone calls at will. On December 18, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency recommended that senior government and political figures switch mobile communications to end-to-end encrypted apps. It remains unclear when companies and the government will be able to guarantee Americans comprehensive security against these threats.
