Aker Solutions and ABB are the fortunate winners of a significant contract to provide Frontend Engineering and Design (FEED) services for the GreenVolt project, an impressive offshore wind project off the coast of Scotland. A key segment of the FEED involves Aker Solutions' responsibility for the design of the high-voltage offshore substations and the overall system architecture, including the onshore high-voltage components.
This project involves designing the electrical infrastructure and integrating renewable energy sources from floating wind farms into the power supply of oil and gas platforms as well as the British mainland. Furthermore, the contract includes the development of a large-scale substructure and the planning for the transportation and installation of the substation.
Through the delivery of offshore substations, Aker Solutions aims to drive innovation, standardization, and efficiency in this groundbreaking project. The company’s locations in London and Aberdeen will be crucial for local coordination and smooth project support. The work is distributed across Aker Solutions' sites in Fornebu, Mumbai, London, and Aberdeen.
Henrik Inadomi, Executive Vice President for New Energies at Aker Solutions, emphasized, "Our partnership with ABB in supporting Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy as part of GreenVolt underscores our commitment to promote Europe’s vision for the expansion of offshore wind energy. This collaboration significantly contributes to our shared commitment to create profitable value chains for the European offshore wind industry."
With the development of the 560-megawatt project by Vårgrønn and Flotation Energy, GreenVolt marks a decisive step in the large-scale application of floating offshore wind turbines to electrify and decarbonize the surrounding platforms. The plan includes up to 35 floating wind turbines, which are part of a pioneering commercial facility for Europe’s wind energy. While much of the renewable electricity will be fed into the British power grid, the project also contributes to reducing emissions in the North Sea offshore oil and gas industry and supports the decommissioning of existing offshore power generators.
Saving one million tons of CO₂ annually, GreenVolt establishes a sustainable milestone in achieving the UK and Scottish climate goals. Modern Financial Markets Data
